Stewart St house is a stealthily hidden interpretation of the heritage single fronted in a predominantly traditional setting. The restoration and resurrection of the original facade is offset by the modern rear extension that responds both to the site context and strict planning requirements. Our approach was to create a home that seamlessly integrates within typical a Brunswick  streetscape while offering a contemporary and highly energy efficient home beyond the stained glass front door.

When viewed from the streetscape the upper form is an interpretation of the original roof pitch – a twin peak of simple geometry. The high level gable glazing being a sympathetic nod to the heritage vernacular while providing a glimpse of the street gum tree upper canopy when viewed from the interior. A side path and landscape intervention provides a green slice between hard surfaces and solid forms while offering a secondary access for the family and those friends who bypass the front door.

The modest 172m2 home is ideally suited to the family of 4 with distinct private and communal spaces and a strong relationship to the outdoors, both visually and physically. Privacy from the rear living space is achieved via a rear thoroughfare that is juxtaposed from the main entry. This new circulation path also provides access to the upper storey and opportunities for daylight and ventilation through the long, linear void. 

Environmentally sustainable design principles are used throughout the house. Natural cross flow ventilation and stack ventilation via the stair void provide fresh air. Passive heating and cooling resulting from orientation, glazing and shading elements. Thermal insulation is maximised in floor, wall and ceiling zones. 

The house is a sanctuary within the densely populated urban context. Spaces are generous without being excessive; interconnected while maintaining function. As described by the owners, being home is like being on holiday.
