Brief: New build – a dream home and garage/studio

Elizabeth St house is the ultimate dream forever home. Designed for the needs of a busy, modern family the house and rear studio caters to the needs and desires of the clients and meets the brief in every aspect.
Located in the inner western suburb of Yarraville, one of Melbourne’s most sought after location, the project makes full use of the generous lot size, access, orientation and surrounding context.
The notion of regeneration underpins the design. The brief called for a house that could support the daily rhythms of a highly social family while accommodating the demands of working from home, alongside a considered approach to environmental performance—natural light, ventilation, materiality and a net-positive energy outcome.
A defining principle is the integration of environmental and biophilic design. Each space is shaped by a visual and physical connection to landscape and planting, ensuring that the experience of nature is constant and immediate. The entry sequence unfolds through a double-height corridor that draws the eye toward a central courtyard garden, where native planting becomes a focal point from multiple vantage points. This connection to light, air and vegetation extends throughout the home.
The spatial planning reflects a social sensibility, supporting both collective and more intimate modes of living. Spaces for gathering and retreat are carefully balanced—from a quiet reading lounge and library overlooking the courtyard, to a family living area that opens to outdoor entertaining, garden and pool. The home adapts to the evolving patterns of family life while maintaining a strong emphasis on connection and shared experience.
Environmental performance is embedded from the outset, informed by digital modelling and collaboration with sustainability consultants to achieve a net-zero, carbon-positive outcome. Passive design strategies are integral to the architecture, shaping both form and function.
Key features of the home include a spacious 340m2 new build house, rear garage and upper level studio space, large roof top terrace, internal kitchen garden with views to/from the main living spaces, lush gardens filling every open area of the site and a custom pool and space with access to the house and rear studio.
