Brief: New Build

The Alexandra Cr house, set within the leafy fabric of Surrey Hills, emerges as a finely resolved response to a steep, irregular site, where constraint becomes opportunity. Conceived as a new custom double storey home, the project negotiates complex planning requirements through a confident yet measured architectural language—balancing solidity with openness, and privacy with connection.
The home is anchored by a robust material expression of pale masonry and natural stone, establishing both permanence and thermal mass. This grounding element enables passive winter heating, allowing the building to absorb and slowly release warmth, while high insulation and high-performance glazing enhance its energy-efficient performance. The result is an all-electric home that operates with quiet environmental intelligence.
At its heart, a sculptural void redefines domestic living. A central internal garden, complete with a mature tree, is wrapped by a light-filled staircase—an immersive moment of biophilia that brings nature deep into the plan. From here, spaces unfold in a seamless sequence of open plan living, where abundant natural light and cross-flow ventilation ensure comfort throughout the seasons.
The interior palette is deliberately restrained yet luxurious. Natural marble, warm timber, and textured finishes create a calm, resort-like atmosphere, echoing a growing architectural tendency toward enduring, tactile materials that elevate everyday experience . Each room is oriented to capture curated views of surrounding vegetation, reinforcing a continuous dialogue between inside and out.
Outdoor terraces and sheltered courtyards extend the living spaces, enabling indoor/outdoor entertaining framed by gardens filled with abundant native plants – a must have for the client. In this way, the house becomes not just a dwelling, but a landscape in itself—crafted for multigenerational living, where architecture, environment, and family life are intricately interwoven.
