Brief: Renovation & Extension with high ESD goals

Wellington St House, located in a quintessential inner west context, bucks the trend for the predominant Art Deco, north facing homes that are presented to the streetscape.
An opportunity presented itself to capture northern light within the rear extension, with generous block widths and wide streets, there was plenty of sky to see. Original plans for a double storey rear extension gave way to a more modest single storey design that offered the opportunity for a bold gesture to the new form, both formal and functional.
Though being single storey, the spaces are generous and abundant in light, volume and connections to external spaces. The apparent modesty of the new works are thoroughly offset by natural materials, texture and a fondness for social engagement and interaction.
Beyond the facade and finishes lies a strong connection to environmental design and sustainability. Natural ventilation is a key ESD feature of this environmental consciousness, both cross flow and vertical stack ventilation through the feature highlight windows. Daylight is abundant without compromising on unnecessary heat gain. Walls and ceilings are heavily insulated while the concrete slab, also heavily insulated, benefits from thermal mass passive heating in the cold winter months.
Wellington St house is a shining example of optimal space planning, design efficiency and ESD excellence.
