Brief: Renovation & Extension of a house and bungalow

The Percy St House is a bold statement for it’s prominent corner site in Melbourne’s inner north. A considered response to complex planning controls and layered histories, the heritage renovation and double storey extension reframe the existing dwelling, while a separate renovation of a heritage mud brick studio anchors the project in its past, allowing old and new to coexist with quiet confidence.
The minimal façade design belies a vibrant interior world. From the street, the architecture is restrained—almost reticent—yet beyond, the residence unfolds into a generous spatial layout defined by openness, light and fluidity. This calibrated contrast reflects a broader approach seen in Brunswick renovations, where modest exteriors often give way to expansive, light-filled interiors that privilege connection and adaptability.
Living is arranged with clarity: bedrooms upstairs, living downstairs. The ground plane is conceived as an open plan living environment, where kitchen, dining and lounge dissolve into one another and extend outward. Glazing and sliding elements invite indoor/outdoor living, dissolving boundaries and drawing abundant natural light deep into the plan—an essential move in transforming traditionally enclosed homes into breathable contemporary spaces.
Materiality and colour animate the interior. An adventurous and whimsical palette plays against clean architectural lines, creating moments of delight within a disciplined framework. The result is both playful and composed.
Sustainability is embedded throughout. As an all-electric home, it prioritises energy efficient systems, passive orientation and thermal performance, aligning with a growing shift toward environmentally responsive residential design in Melbourne’s inner suburbs.
Percy St House is ultimately a study in dualities—heritage and modernity, restraint and expression, solidity and lightness—resolved into a home that feels both grounded and quietly uplifting.
