Brief: Renovation, extension & seperate rear double story garage

The Darebin Road House in Northcote is a quiet reimagining of suburban life—an architecture of restraint, warmth and enduring purpose. Conceived as a renovation and single storey extension, the project restores a weathered heritage dwelling and extends it into a contemporary, light-filled sanctuary for a growing, multigenerational family.
At the street, the home retains its familiar scale and character, carefully repaired and grounded in its past. Beyond, the architecture unfolds with clarity—spaces aligned to light, air and garden. The new rear garage with an upper-level loft introduces flexibility, supporting working from home while accommodating evolving family rhythms.
The heart of the home is an open plan living domain, where sloping ceilings lift the volume and draw in abundant natural light. Here, kitchen, dining and living form a seamless continuum—an approach that prioritises connection, echoing a broader architectural pursuit of spatial flow and wellbeing . Large openings dissolve the boundary between inside and out, enabling natural cross flow ventilation and a gentle dialogue with the garden beyond.
Materiality is simple, refined and tactile. Warm timbers, soft stone and muted tones create a calm, cohesive palette—quietly luxurious without excess. High-end fixtures, fittings and lighting are integrated with precision, reinforcing a sense of permanence and care.
Sustainability is embedded, not applied. High insulation, high performance windows and an all-electric system ensure the home performs efficiently, supporting comfort across seasons.
To the rear, outdoor entertaining becomes an extension of daily life. A covered alfresco with outdoor kitchen and BBQ overlooks the garden—a place of gathering, ritual and ease.
In a dense urban context, the Darebin Road House offers something rare: a sanctuary defined not by isolation, but by thoughtful connection—to light, to landscape, and to the rhythms of family life.
