Brief: Renovation & Extension with a high ESD focus

The Albion St House is a carefully considered renovation and extension that transforms a modest dwelling into a light-filled, environmentally responsive home. Working within a limited budget, the design prioritises efficiency and performance over excess, resulting in an architecture that is both restrained and generous.
The reconfigured plan establishes an efficient layout, clearly separating private sleeping zones from an open, communal living area. This new extension becomes the heart of the home, seamlessly connecting kitchen, dining, and living spaces to the garden beyond. Large glazed openings and a sheltered alfresco zone blur the boundary between inside and out, reinforcing a strong sense of biophilia.
Environmental design strategies are embedded throughout. Passive design principles drive the orientation and form, enabling passive heating and cooling year-round. Deep roof overhangs and articulated shading elements provide effective passive shading, reducing summer heat gain while allowing winter sun to penetrate deep into the interior. High-level windows and operable openings maximise natural ventilation, promoting cross-breezes that reduce reliance on mechanical systems.
Abundant natural light enters through carefully positioned glazing and clerestory windows, illuminating the interior while enhancing spatial quality. Internally, thermal mass elements help stabilise temperature fluctuations, absorbing heat during the day and releasing it as temperatures drop.
Material choices reinforce a palette inspired by nature, with timber, muted tones, and textured finishes creating warmth and continuity with the landscape. Sustainability extends beyond form and materials, incorporating sole energy generation and water harvesting for re-use, reducing the home’s environmental footprint.
The result is a modest yet refined intervention—an architecture that demonstrates how thoughtful design can elevate everyday living while responding responsibly to climate, site, and budget.
